Cell Phone Use Believed to be Factor in Deadly Crash, Killing 4

A deadly crash occurred in Argyle last weekend, resulting in the deaths of two mothers and two daughters. The crash was reported about 8:15 on Saturday in the 8000 block of Fort Worth Drive, which has a 60 mph speed limit. A Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound when it crossed into the northbound lane, crashing head-on into a Volvo.
Both of the vehicles were carrying a mother and a daughter. One of the daughters was 12 and the other was 4. There was no indication of any mechanical failure before the crash, and all safety systems in the vehicle appeared to be working. Alcohol and speeding were also determined to not be a factor in the accident. It’s believed that cell phone use may have contributed to the accident.
According to the National Safety Council, the use of cell phones while driving has become an extremely dangerous epidemic in the U.S. Despite the fact that many states have laws limiting the use of cell phones while driving, more and more automobile accidents are being linked to their use.
The NSC estimates that at any given time, approximately 11 percent of drivers are using their cell phones. Over a million automobile accidents annually are attributed to cell phone usage, accounting for almost a quarter of all automobile accidents.
When an accident occurs, it typically takes an investigation on the part of the police to find out that the driver who caused the accident was using a cell phone. Drivers may not admit they were texting or talking on the phone, but phone records and eyewitness testimony can prove that they were.
